Permaculture

SO WHAT'S PERMACULTURE?

It's a set of design principles that can be applied when we're setting up sustainable, regenerative gardens, small holdings and farms. They help us to work with nature for the benefit of our landscape and people - regarding them not as separate entities but thoroughly enfolded and connected. The three guiding ethics of Permaculture are: Earthcare, Peoplecare and Futurecare. The principles work in a lot of other systems too.

THE PERMACULTURE DESIGN PRINCIPLES

There's twelve, and they really work!

They're really common sense when you start to think about them. One of my favourite principles is "Design from Patterns to Details". You often see people working on garden projects without really understanding the basic natural processes underlying everything. Surprise surprise... they can give themselves a lot of work and end up with a sea of weeds. There's a tendency to do things a certain way just because that's how they're usually done. Also, we've got used in agriculture to using a lot of machinery and chemicals, just because they've been cheap... those days may be numbered...

If you'd like to find out more about Permaculture thinking please ask, we can show you the ideas in practice at the farm and would be delighted to put on an introductory class if there was demand.
